Kumarakom Lake Resort
Built in 2000, Kumarakom Lake Resort is a 25-acre luxury heritage resort in Kerala on the banks of Vembanad Lake, designed by architect Tony Joseph to highlight traditional Kerala architecture. It was constructed over five years using materials from century-old, dismantled Tarawad (ancestral homes) and features a 200-year-old restored Ettukettu mansion as its restaurant.
Key Historical Aspects of the Resort:
- Design & Architecture: The resort's design is inspired by the regional context of Kerala, featuring steeply pitched roofs, deep-eaved verandahs, and, notably, is built within a simulated, scenic "backwater village" setting.
- The Ettukettu Restaurant: The resort's multi-cuisine restaurant, the Ettukettu, was once the ancestral home of the martial arts guru to King Marthanda Varma, which was historically commissioned by the King himself.
- Development & Construction: The 25-acre resort took nearly five years to construct, utilizing materials sourced from more than 100 traditional homes across Kerala, showcasing a commitment to preserving traditional architectural elements.
- Notable Recognition: The resort has earned a reputation as a top heritage destination, including hosting Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, for the 65th birthday of Prince Charles.
The resort has established itself as a landmark of luxury and cultural preservation in the Kottayam district of Kerala.
