Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra

Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra in Kovalam, Kerala, is a 5-star luxury heritage resort established on a clifftop, featuring 150+ year-old traditional Keralan tharawad homes. Originally initiated in the 1970s-1980s by Klaus Schleusener, a German professor who restored demolished traditional homes, it became a renowned heritage hotel focusing on Ayurvedic wellness.

Key Historical & Design Elements:

  • Origin: Klaus Schleusener fell in love with the location in 1982, later partnering with architect Karl Damschen to transform the barren hill into a residential sanctuary.
  • Architecture: The resort is an "outdoor museum," with 28+ restored wooden ettukettu (eight-sided) and nallukettu (four-sided) houses relocated from various parts of Kerala.
  • Evolution: It developed from a private residence into a Bed & Breakfast, and later received official status as a Heritage Hotel from the Government of India in 1995.
  • Brand Acquisition: The property is now part of the Niraamaya Wellness Retreats group, which emphasizes holistic wellness, Ayurveda, and heritage conservation.
  • Key Features: The property is famous for its cliff-edge infinity pool and specialized Ayurveda center.
