Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala

Established in 1902 by the visionary physician Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier in Kottakkal, Kerala, Arya Vaidya Sala (AVS) began as a small village clinic and has evolved into a premier, world-renowned charitable institution for authentic Ayurvedic treatment and medicine manufacturing. It is a multi-unit organization known for blending traditional practices with modern research, managing hospitals, factories, and extensive herbal gardens.

Key Highlights in the Story of AVS:

  • Founder's Vision: P.S. Varier (1869–1944) revolutionized Ayurveda by focusing on standardized, bulk-manufactured medicines rather than just individual preparations.
  • Establishment: Started on October 12, 1902, in Kottakkal, it quickly gained popularity as a trusted source for authentic Ayurvedic care.
  • Charitable Foundation: In 1924, the Charitable Hospital was established to provide free or affordable Ayurvedic and allopathic treatments to the needy.
  • Education and Culture: P.S. Varier founded the Ayurveda Pathashala (now a college) in 1917 and established the P.S.V. Natyasangham (Kathakali Academy) in 1939 to promote classical arts.
  • Growth and Modernization: Today, AVS manages five hospitals with over 1500 retail outlets, three production units (including one in Nanjangud, Karnataka), and a dedicated Center for Medicinal Plants Research.
  • Legacy: The institution is a charitable trust that operates on a "no-profit" model, with revenue reinvested into research, education, and patient care, maintaining a 120-year legacy.

Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala remains a pinnacle of classical Ayurvedic therapy (Panchakarma) and high-quality medicine production, operating in accordance with the founder’s vision to make healthcare accessible to all.
