Founded in 1985 by Baby Mathew and his brother Dr. Polly Mathew, Somatheeram Ayurveda Group established the world’s first "Ayurveda Hospital in a Resort Ambience" in Kerala, India. Located on a cliff near Kovalam Beach, it pioneered combining traditional Ayurvedic treatments with tourism, focusing on authenticity, yoga, and natural healing. 

Key Aspects of the Somatheeram Story:

• Founder's Vision: Originally from a background in trade, the founders aimed to introduce traditional Indian healthcare to an international audience.
• The World's First: Founded in 1985, the resort was designed as a "hospital in a resort ambiance," creating a new industry standard.
• Expansion & Growth: The group has grown to include multiple resorts, such as Somatheeram Ayurvedic Health Resort and Soma Birds Lagoon, alongside offering backwater experiences.
• Accolades & Recognition: It has been recognized as the "Best Ayurvedic Centre" numerous times by the Kerala government and holds awards from the Government of India, including the Hall of Fame.
• Split in Ownership: In 2006, the founders went their separate ways, resulting in distinct managements for the original Somatheeram and the nearby Manaltheeram resort. 

The group emphasizes authentic care, with its hospitals featuring herbal gardens, experienced therapists, and NABH accreditation.
