The Oberoi Udaivilas

The Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur, Rajasthan, opened in 2002 as a purpose-built luxury resort designed to look like a traditional Mewari palace. Situated on 30–50 acres of the Maharana of Mewar’s former 200-year-old hunting grounds on Lake Pichola, it was designed with extensive Rajasthani architecture, including domes, fountains, and interconnected gardens.

Key Historical and Design Aspects:

  • Design Concept: While appearing historic, it is a modern build (opened early 2000s) created to reflect the heritage of Rajasthan, featuring detailed, hand-carved stone columns, fountains, and reflecting pools.
  • Location: The property is situated on the banks of Lake Pichola, occupying land that was once the exclusive hunting grounds of the royal family.
  • Architecture: The resort is characterized by its sprawling layout, connected by courtyards and corridors, with architecture that references traditional palaces of the region.
  • Recognition: It has gained international recognition for its luxury, often rated among the best hotels in the world by publications like Travel + Leisure.

The hotel, a flagship for the Oberoi Group, focuses on blending traditional Indian aesthetic with modern luxury, including specialized amenities like semi-private pools.
