Pakyong is a small town in East Sikkim and is home to Pakyong Airport (PYG), the first airport in Sikkim. The town is well-connected by air, road, and rail, making it an accessible destination for travelers heading to Gangtok and other parts of Sikkim.

 

1. By Air  (Fastest Way to Reach Pakyong)

(a) Pakyong Airport (PYG) – 5 km from Pakyong Town

  • Pakyong Airport is the only airport in Sikkim, inaugurated in 2018.
  • Flights operate from Delhi, Kolkata, and Guwahati (subject to weather conditions).
  • Limited flight availability due to foggy conditions in winter.

(b) Alternative: Bagdogra Airport (IXB) – 95 km from Pakyong

  • Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal is the nearest major airport with better flight connectivity.
  • Daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
  • Travel from Bagdogra to Pakyong:
    • Private Taxi: ₹3,500 - ₹5,000 (4-5 hours).
    • Shared Cabs: ₹700 - ₹1,000 per person (from Siliguri).

 

2. By Train  (Nearest Railway Stations to Pakyong)

(a) New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station – 90 km from Pakyong

  • Well-connected to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, and Guwahati.
  • Popular trains to NJP:
    • Darjeeling Mail (from Kolkata)
    • New Jalpaiguri Rajdhani Express (from Delhi)
    • Guwahati Express (from Bangalore)

(b) Rangpo Railway Station (Upcoming) – 35 km from Pakyong

  • A new railway station under construction, expected to open soon.

Travel from NJP to Pakyong:

  • Private Taxi: ₹3,500 - ₹4,500 (4-5 hours).
  • Shared Cabs: ₹700 - ₹1,000 per person (from Siliguri).
  • Bus Services: Limited buses available from Siliguri Bus Stand.

 

3. By Road  (Best for Budget Travelers & Local Tourists)

Pakyong is well-connected by road to Gangtok, Siliguri, and other major towns in Sikkim.

(a) From Gangtok (30 km, 1.5 hours drive)

  • Taxi/Shared Cab: ₹500 - ₹700 per person.
  • Private Taxi: ₹2,500 - ₹3,500.
  • Route: Gangtok → Ranipool → Pakyong.

(b) From Siliguri (95 km, 4 hours drive)

  • Buses & Shared Cabs: Available from Siliguri Junction & Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand.
  • Route: Siliguri → Rangpo → Pakyong.

(c) From Kalimpong (68 km, 3 hours drive)

  • Private Taxi: ₹2,500 - ₹3,500.
  • Shared Cabs: Available at ₹700 - ₹1,000 per person.
  • Scenic Route: Kalimpong → Rangpo → Pakyong.

 

4. Best Way to Reach Pakyong

  • From Kolkata & Delhi: Flight to Pakyong/Bagdogra, then taxi to Pakyong.
  • From Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai: Flight to Bagdogra, then road journey.
  • From North-East India: Train to NJP or flight to Pakyong.

  • Avoid traveling during monsoons (July-September) due to landslides.
