Mawsynram, the wettest place on Earth, is located 60 km from Shillong in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. Since it is a remote village, it does not have an airport or railway station, but it is well-connected by road from Shillong and Guwahati.

 

 By Air – Nearest Airports

1. Shillong Airport (Umroi Airport) – 85 km (~2.5 hours by road)

✅ The nearest airport to Mawsynram.
✅ Limited flights available from Kolkata and Guwahati.
✅ From Shillong Airport:

  • Take a prepaid taxi (~₹2,500-₹3,500) to Mawsynram.
  • Alternatively, take a shared sumo or local bus to Shillong, then hire a taxi to Mawsynram.

 Tip: Pre-book a taxi as public transport is limited at Shillong Airport.

 

2. Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (Guwahati) – 165 km (~4.5 hours by road)

✅ The best and most connected airport for reaching Mawsynram.
✅ Well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata.
✅ From Guwahati Airport:

  • Take a shared sumo or private taxi (~₹500-₹6,000) to Shillong.
  • From Shillong, take a local taxi or bus to Mawsynram (~₹1,500-₹2,500).

 Tip: Guwahati Airport is the best option for domestic and international travelers.

 

 By Train – Nearest Railway Stations

1. Guwahati Railway Station – 165 km (~5 hours by road)

✅ The nearest major railway station to Mawsynram.
✅ Well-connected to all major Indian cities.
✅ From Guwahati Railway Station:

  • Take a shared sumo (~₹400-₹600 per person) or bus (~₹200-₹500 per person) to Shillong.
  • From Shillong, hire a private taxi or take a local bus to Mawsynram (~2 hours).

 Tip: Shared sumos to Shillong leave frequently from Paltan Bazar, near Guwahati Railway Station.
