While large natural forests are not a dominant feature within Pondicherry's immediate vicinity, significant efforts in afforestation and botanical preservation contribute to its green cover.

• Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest (TDEF): This unique forest type is found in the coastal plains of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. It is characterized by trees that remain green during the dry season and shed leaves during the monsoon. Conservation efforts, particularly in Auroville, focus on restoring this critically endangered ecosystem.
