Spice Plantations in Maharashtra

Though not as dominant as in Kerala or Karnataka, Maharashtra also grows several important spices, mainly in the Konkan region and parts of the Western Ghats.

a) Turmeric (Haldi)

  • Regions: Sangli, Satara, Hingoli
  • Used both for domestic cooking and export.
  • Sangli is one of the largest turmeric markets in India.

b) Ginger (Adrak)

  • Cultivated in Pune, Satara, and Ratnagiri districts.
  • Often intercropped with bananas or vegetables.

c) Black Pepper (Kali Mirch)

  • Grown in coastal Konkan areas, often on areca nut or coconut trees.
  • Part of mixed plantations with betel nut and clove.

d) Cardamom

  • Grown in parts of Sindhudurg and Kolhapur, though in smaller quantities compared to South India.

e) Cloves and Cinnamon

  • Found in select hilly and coastal regions with high humidity.
