Hidden gems and offbeat locations

Gujarat is often recognized for its iconic landmarks—Gir National Park, Somnath Temple, the Rann of Kutch, and the Statue of Unity. But beyond these popular attractions, Gujarat hides a treasure trove of offbeat destinations that offer tranquility, adventure, and raw, untouched beauty. For travelers who like to step off the beaten path, these hidden gems in Gujarat offer unforgettable experiences filled with history, culture, and nature.

1. Polo Forest – A Lost Kingdom in the Wilderness

Nestled in the Aravalli Range near Vijaynagar (Sabarkantha district), Polo Forest is a serene and mystical destination that combines nature, history, and spirituality. The forest is home to the ruins of 10th-century Jain and Hindu temples, abandoned forts, and river streams covered in thick greenery.

It’s a paradise for nature lovers, bird watchers, and trekkers. The monsoon season brings out its true beauty with misty trails and lush surroundings. Polo Utsav, held annually, celebrates the region's ecology and tribal culture.

2. Dholavira – The Harappan Marvel

While Lothal is well known, Dholavira is Gujarat’s lesser-visited but incredibly significant Indus Valley Civilization site, located in the Rann of Kutch. It showcases advanced urban planning, an ancient water conservation system, and a unique signboard in Harappan script.

The surreal, white desert landscape surrounding Dholavira makes it a stunning photography and archaeological exploration destination. The recently developed infrastructure has made access easier, yet it remains a peaceful, crowd-free location.

3. Zarwani Waterfall – Nature’s Retreat near the Statue of Unity

While thousands flock to see the Statue of Unity, few take a detour to explore Zarwani Waterfall, hidden within the Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary near Kevadia. Surrounded by forests and rocky terrain, this waterfall is perfect for nature walks, picnics, and eco-tourism.

Trekking and wildlife spotting (sloth bears, hyenas, and antelopes) are possible in the area, and guided forest tours are available. The place is especially vibrant during and just after the monsoon.

4. Girmal Waterfall – Gujarat’s Tallest Waterfall

Tucked deep within the Dang forests, Girmal Waterfall is Gujarat’s tallest waterfall and a pristine destination. It remains unknown to many tourists, making it ideal for those who crave untouched natural beauty.

The scenic drive through tribal villages and teak forests, followed by the thundering fall and misty valley, is an unforgettable experience. A small forest department watchtower offers panoramic views, and eco-tourism camps nearby allow overnight stays.

5. Mandvi Beach – Serenity Beyond Kutch’s Desert

While most tourists in Kutch are busy exploring the white salt desert, Mandvi Beach on the Arabian Sea is an offbeat coastal escape. Quiet, clean, and charming, it offers camel rides, water sports, and the chance to see wooden ships being hand-built at the Mandvi Shipbuilding Yard.

The Vijay Vilas Palace, a royal summer retreat near the beach, adds a heritage touch to this hidden seaside getaway.

6. Ninai Waterfall – Hidden Beauty in Narmada

Located near Dediapada in Narmada district, Ninai Waterfall is another spectacular offbeat location ideal for a day trip from Bharuch or Vadodara. It’s surrounded by Satpura hills and forests, making it a great spot for eco-tourism, camping, and photography.

The tribal culture of the nearby villages adds cultural flavor to the natural surroundings, and the tourism department is developing this area into a nature education hub.

7. Hodka Village – Authentic Kutchi Living

While Bhuj and Rann Utsav attract large crowds, few venture to Hodka, a small artisan village in Kutch where travelers can stay in mud huts (bhungas), eat traditional food, and enjoy local crafts, music, and camel rides.

Run by community-based tourism initiatives, Hodka offers an intimate experience of Kutchi culture, far from commercial tourist setups.

Gujarat is not just about monuments and festivals—it’s also about quiet forests, tribal villages, forgotten ruins, and tranquil beaches. These hidden gems and offbeat locations allow travelers to explore a side of Gujarat that’s untouched, unexplored, and unforgettable. Perfect for backpackers, nature enthusiasts, photographers, and cultural explorers, these destinations are waiting to be discovered—before the rest of the world catches on.
