Portuguese Rule: Daman was annexed by the Portuguese in 1559, and Diu had been under Portuguese control since 1535.
These regions remained Portuguese territories for over 400 years, even after India's independence in 1947.
In 1961, the Indian government incorporated Daman and Diu into the Indian Union following Operation Vijay, which ended Portuguese rule in Goa, Daman, and Diu.
Became a Union Territory separate from Goa in 1987 when Goa attained statehood.
In 2020, Daman and Diu were merged with Dadra and Nagar Haveli to form a single Union Territory.
