British Influence: Myanmar dominated the area from 1819 to 1826, after which the British began annexing the region's hill areas.
Formation of State: After India's independence, the area was initially a Centrally Administered Territory called Naga Hills in 1957, under the Assam Governor's administration. Following negotiations, the Naga people agreed to form a separate state within the Indian Union. Nagaland was formally inaugurated as the 16th state of the Indian Union on December 1, 1963.
