  • Population: Approximately 2 million (2011 Census). More than four-fifths of the population lives in small, isolated villages.
  • Tribes: Nagaland is home to 17 major tribes and numerous sub-tribes, each distinct in terms of customs, language, and dress. Some prominent tribes include Angami, Ao, Chakhesang, Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Kuki, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sangtam, Sumi, Tikhir, Yimkhiung, and Zeliang.
  • Language: While each tribe has its own dialect, English serves as the official state language. Nagamese, a pidgin Assamese, is a common lingua franca for inter-tribe communication.
  • Religion: The population is predominantly Christian (about two-thirds), with a significant Baptist majority. Hinduism and Islam are also practiced. Traditional Naga religion was animistic.
  • Festivals: Nagaland is famously known as the "Land of Festivals," with each tribe celebrating its distinct seasonal festivals with great enthusiasm. Most festivals revolve around agriculture. The Hornbill Festival, held annually in December, is a major cultural event showcasing the diverse Naga heritage, music, and dance, and is a significant tourism driver.
  • Attire: Each tribe has unique and colorful traditional attire, jewelry, and beads. Shawls are often intricately designed and can denote the wearer's social status.
