Geography & Climate of Ladakh

Where is Ladakh Located?

Ladakh is a high-altitude desert region located in the northernmost part of India, in the Union Territory of Ladakh. It is bordered by Tibet (China) to the east, Himachal Pradesh to the south, Jammu & Kashmir to the west, and Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan to the northwest.

  • Ladakh is nestled between the Himalayan and Karakoram Mountain ranges, making it one of the highest and most remote regions in the world.
  • The Indus River flows through Ladakh, supporting life in this otherwise arid landscape.
  • Major towns include Leh (the capital) and Kargil, with several smaller villages scattered across the valleys.

Climate of Ladakh

Ladakh experiences an extreme and unique climate due to its high altitude, ranging from 2,500 meters to over 7,000 meters above sea level.

  • Summer (June to September): Pleasant and ideal for travel, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C during the day.
  • Winter (October to March): Harsh and freezing, with temperatures dropping to -20°C to -30°C, especially in January and February.
  • Monsoon (July-August): Ladakh falls in a rain-shadow region, meaning it receives very little rainfall compared to other parts of India.
