Biodiversity and Ecological Importance

• Many lakes in Karnataka are recognized as Important Bird Areas (IBAs):
  • Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary (Kaveri backwaters)
  • Magadi Kere (Lake) – near Gadag (home to bar-headed geese)
  • Hebbal Lake, Kokkare Bellur, and Karanji Lake
• These wetlands support both resident and migratory species like storks, egrets, ibises, kingfishers, and cormorants.
