Meghalaya is well-connected to major cities in India by air, road, and rail, making it accessible for travelers. However, since it is a hilly state with scenic but winding roads, traveling within Meghalaya requires careful planning.

 How to Reach Meghalaya?

1. By Air – Fastest & Most Convenient

Nearest Airport: Shillong Airport (SHL), also known as Umroi Airport
✅ Located 30 km from Shillong, Meghalaya’s capital.
Limited flights from major cities (Kolkata, Guwahati).
✅ Small airport, so flights may be delayed or rescheduled due to weather.

 Recommended Airport for Better Connectivity:
Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati (Assam)
Closest major airport (120 km from Shillong).
✅ Well-connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata & Chennai.
✅ Frequent taxis & shared cabs available to Shillong (2.5–3 hours drive).

Best Option: Fly to Guwahati Airport, then take a taxi or bus to Shillong.

2. By Train – Best for Budget Travelers

Nearest Railway Station: Guwahati Railway Station (Assam)

✅ Major trains to Guwahati:

 Dibrugarh Express (Chennai/Bangalore – Guwahati)

 From Guwahati Railway Station:
Hire a taxi/shared sumo (₹500–₹2,500 per person) to Shillong (2.5–3 hours).
Take a Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) bus from Paltan Bazar (₹150–₹300).

3. By Road – Scenic & Budget-Friendly

Meghalaya is well-connected by road to Assam, Arunachal Pradesh & other Northeast states.

From Guwahati to Shillong (120 km, 2.5–3 hours)

  • Best & fastest route via NH6.
