A Treasure Trove of Handicrafts
Andhra Pradesh is known for its diverse range of handicrafts, many of which have earned GI (Geographical Indication) tags and global appreciation. These crafts are rooted in the traditions of various communities and regions across the state.
. Kondapalli Toys (Krishna District)
One of the most iconic crafts of Andhra Pradesh, Kondapalli toys are made from a special lightwood called "Tella Poniki." These colorful, hand-painted wooden toys often depict mythological characters, rural life, animals, and birds. The toy-making process involves carving, assembling, and painting, usually done by families who have preserved this art for generations.
2. Etikoppaka Lacquerware (Visakhapatnam)
This craft, hailing from the village of Etikoppaka, is known for its eco-friendly, lacquer-coated wooden toys made using traditional techniques. The natural dyes and vegetable colors used in painting these toys make them safe for children and attractive to collectors.
3. Kalamkari Art (Machilipatnam and Srikalahasti)
Kalamkari is an ancient hand-painting technique on fabric, using natural dyes. There are two distinctive styles:
Kalamkari fabrics are used in sarees, wall hangings, dupattas, and home décor items.
4. Bidriware (Hyderabad & surroundings)
Although mostly associated with Telangana, parts of Andhra Pradesh also contribute to Bidri craft—a metal inlay work on a blackened alloy of zinc and copper. It’s used to make vases, hookahs, trays, and jewelry boxes.
